Local mixed media and auditory artist Kyle Hollinger is bringing his new exhibit, Group Therapy, to Mulberry Art Studios this March. Group Therapy opens with a First Friday Reception on March 3 from 5-8, and will be available for viewing throughout the month of March. Guests who are interested in seeing the exhibit but are unable to come during the opening should email Stephanie.mulberryart@gmail.com to arrange a time to view the artwork. Mulberry is located in historic downtown Lancaster at 21 North Mulberry St, and offers free parking in their private lot.
Comprised of both visual and auditory elements, Group Therapy provides a window into Hollinger’s struggles of living with mental illness. Hollinger views himself and the subject matter in his pieces as a functioning group working together. Hence the title, “Group Therapy.” This collection includes pieces about accepting the difficulties of depression and others that are reactionary to states brought on by high anxiety. The process of creation is not necessarily therapeutic or cathartic. These pieces grant perspective and help to define his current state of mental health.
“My artwork explores and personifies the less popular and more difficult aspects of life,” says Hollinger. “The process involves approaching each piece with a broad idea and a visceral execution. The composition is a clear path from brain to hand. Allowing myself to function this way not only gives my work its essence but helps with the management in other aspects of life. Many of us have internal struggles. My pieces are an outward expression of these difficulties, and hopefully, a reminder that if you are struggling, you are not alone.”
Kyle Hollinger is a mixed media and auditory artist out of Mechanicsburg, PA. He is a husband and a father of 3. At a very young age, Kyle found a great interest in creating both visually and sonically. He attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where he studied an eclectic assortment of mediums including electronic music, painting and woodworking. While at UArts, Kyle earned his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. Since graduating he has continued to work as a musician and artist.
