This spring, when the soil reaches 64 degrees 8 inches beneath the surface, a magical event will occur. Thousands of Brood X Cicadas will emerge after spending 17 years underground as immature grubs. This is one of the most amazing spectacles of nature that should be celebrated, especially given the steep declines in insect abundance and diversity we are currently seeing. Join us as we discuss Cicada biology and ecology, the role protected lands play in insect conservation, and how the public can get involved in Cicada citizen science programs. This is a don’t-miss-it event, as the next time we’ll see these amazing animals above ground will be in 2038!
