Scott Higgins: It's In Their Eyes
We fell in love with the incredible drawings of animals Scott Higgins carefully created for our We Love Our Pets exhibit last April, and we are thrilled to be bringing him back for a solo show this December. Scott Higgins: It’s In Their Eyes, which features his charcoal animal portraits, opens December 6 with a First Friday Reception from 5-9 p.m.
Scott Higgins creates these works with charcoal, each piece taking approximately 12-15 hours to create. The drawings look incredibly realistic, but upon closer inspection you can see the artistic marks. The viewer’s eye fills in the other details when a few are provided. “The eyes are where the feeling is,” says Higgins. “When I nail that, everything else comes together.” To create these works, Higgins works in vine and compressed charcoal, mainly using his hands and a kneadable eraser. “I like using my hands to move the charcoal around and really feel what I’m doing,” he shares.
Higgins is a York-based artist who grew up in Lancaster and has been an artist, practically, his entire life. “When I was 7-years-old, I remember my first drawing being put on the refrigerator (it was a race car speeding to the finish line). I felt so proud, and that is the exact moment when my art career began.” He finds daily inspiration in his pets and how they make him feel. And knowing the special bond people have with the pets in their lives makes him always feel so honored to create a piece for a client.
Scott Higgins was inspired to create this collection after participating in Mulberry Art Studios’ We Love Our Pets show last spring spring. “I really enjoyed participating and was inspired by all of the different depictions of pets but you could see the feeling in all of them,” Higgins says. “I wanted to put together a collection of pets and other animals that showed the same feeling.”
