The City of Lancaster will host an inaugural Women of Color Brunch at City Hall on March 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event corresponds with International Women’s Day on Friday, March 8.
Meant to celebrate, educate, empower and share stories of perseverance and survival, the brunch was initially the idea of City of Lancaster employee Tyresa Bailey.
“I wanted to host this event to celebrate women of color. There is a famous quote by novelist Kola Boof: ‘The black woman is the most unprotected, unloved woman on earth… she is the only flower on earth that grows un-watered.’ I believe that quote to be true, not only for black women but all women of color. No one publicly says, ‘Thank you for all that you do and endure, the burdens placed on your shoulders, and the heavy expectations of the world that women of color carry.’ Many women of color don’t have that support system that others do,” said Bailey.
Bailey is joined by a committee of other City employees and community members: Milzy Carrasco, Director of Neighborhood Engagement, City of Lancaster; Sharon Allen-Spann, Assistant Bureau Chief of Human Resources, City of Lancaster; Joanna Davis, Public Art Manager, City of Lancaster; Tiffany Boynes, Payroll Specialist, City of Lancaster; Carl Patterson, AmeriCorps VISTA; Faith Craig, City Councilwoman, City of Lancaster; Jodie Richardson, Magisterial District Justice, District 02-2-01; Barb Wilson, Executive Director, Lancaster City Housing Authority.
Mayor Danene Sorace will make opening remarks, followed by Julie Morales, the Vice President of Finance from Giant. The main presentation will touch on a variety of topics with videos about and speeches by several women:
EDUCATION: Sharon Allen-Spann, Assistant Bureau Chief of HR, City of Lancaster
EMPOWER: Faith Craig, Councilwoman, City of Lancaster; Milagros “Milly” Morales, Director of Operations, McDonald’s
PERSEVERANCE: Jodie Richardson, Magisterial District Judge
