Staying sane during self-isolation

Being stuck at home for an indefinite amount of time sounds like an introvert’s dream, but even the world’s biggest introvert is bound to go a little stir crazy at such a tumultuous time. If you are looking for ways to keep yourself occupied, we’ve got you covered. 


Work on tasks you have been putting off. Complete your census. Finish your taxes. Start that project you have been thinking about doing. Your mind will feel so much clearer without the extra responsibilities hanging over you.  


Get creative. Whatever that means to you – paint, journal, knit, or dance. Learn how to play an instrument or refresh your previously learned skills. Local businesses like Curio Gallery & Creative Supply  and Potteryworks are offering delivery of their art supplies and activities right to your home. 


Check in with friends and familyCatch up with an old friend over FaceTime. Send a text to that family member you haven’t talked to in a while. Call your parents – they would love to hear from you. My friends and I are planning to have happy hour over FaceTime since we can no longer meet out in the city. For watching Netflix with your longdistance friends, download Netflix Party where you can watch synchronized shows while chatting with friends. 


Treat yourself to some take out. Support your local restaurants and call in an order. There is nothing better than eating your favorite take out while binge watching your favorite show. If you rather not, consider buying a gift card to use after this craziness blows over. Our local restaurants could really use our support right now. Check out which businesses are offering delivery and take out here. 


Reach out to your neighbors, especially those who are living alone or at risk for the coronavirus. Offer to pick up some groceries for them or simply interact (from six feet away) with them for a few minutes to make sure they are holding up okay. Getting to know my neighbors and feeling a strong sense of community right on my block has been one silver lining of this ordeal.  


Catch up. Watch that show you’ve been wanting to start. Listen to that album that you never got around to listening. Read that book you started but never finished.  


Move. YouTube is filled with quick videos to help you stay in shape while the gyms are closedAlways wanted to try yoga but felt too intimidated to go to a class? West End Yoga is holding virtual classes through Facebook Live so you can try it out from the comfort of your own home. 

I started growing radish sprouts in my kitchen. It’s been so enjoyable to watch them grow each day.

Get outdoorsQuarantine doesn’t have to be sitting inside going crazy. You are allowed to go outside and enjoy nature. Get some yard work done. It’s the perfect time to spread grass seed or start some vegetable plants inside to get a head start on the growing seasonGo for a jog or walk around your neighborhood. On sunny days, sit outside, listen to the birds sing and feel the sun on your face. 


Get in the kitchen. If you are a bad chef, thats even better. Now is a great time to strengthen your cooking/baking skills. For the more experienced, you could attempt making bread, donuts, or a fancy souffléYou can whip up some jams and sauces to can or pickle some fresh produce. Maybe make your coveted grandmother’s recipe. The possibilities are endless, and the results are delicious. 


Deep clean your house. Dust the baseboards. Empty and clean the fridge. Go through your closet and weed out anything you no longer need. Start a collection pile so you can donate the clothing once stores start opening back up. Cleaning always helps my mind feel clearer. 


Go for a drive. If you are really itching to get out of the house, hit the road for a little bit. Explore your surroundings from the bubble of your car. 


Take some time to check in on yourself. Ware experiencing frightening era of history. Most of the time, I can’t bring myself to do more than just sit on the couch and read the news. It is more important than ever to make sure you disconnect and give your mind a break. Meditate. Take a bath. Drink a hot cup of tea. Feel your feelings. Anything to make you feel better during this unprecedented time. 


It’s easy to focus on the unknown right now, but when I read this poem by Kitty O’Meara, I feel a sliver of hope. 


“And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. 

And listened more deeply. 

Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. 

Some met their shadows. 

And the people began to think differently. 

And the people healed. 

And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal. 

And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.”
