There’s lots to celebrate! America is 250 years old, Lititz is 270 and the Lititz Historical Foundation is 65. The 3-day event kicks off on Friday with Founder’s Day! (June 12, 1756, marked the official naming of Lititz.) The event (5:30 p.m.) will feature a flag ceremony, guest speakers, refreshments, live music, a special 270th birthday cake and more! On Saturday, a History Festival (11 a.m.-5 p.m.) will feature reenactors, guided tours, demonstrations, artisans, a food truck, plus, a dozen local historical societies will be on hand. On Sunday, the Lititz Moravian Church will host a historic Moravian Singstunde (3-5 p.m., 8 Church Square), along with tours and a demonstration of two colonial pipe organs in Fellowship Hall. The event honors the day – June 19, 1865 – on which enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, it stands as a powerful moment of remembrance, reflection and celebration. Juneteenth in Lancaster has a legacy rooted in the Strawberry Street Festival, the earliest known (1905) African American celebration in the county. Revived in 1997 by Paul Culbreth and Darlene Colon as a Juneteenth event held at Thaddeus Stevens College, this celebration has grown into a cherished tradition honoring emancipation and African American culture. Living the Experience

Living the Experience is a creative, spiritual and interactive historical reenactment of the Underground Railroad, as it occurred on-site, at the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in the City of Lancaster. This Underground Railroad living-history program is presented interactively in first person interpretation in an effort to bring alive the people, places and events of Lancaster. The program actively engages its audiences in learning about Lancaster’s involvement in the Underground Railroad and its role as a free community of Africans.
The reenactment provides guests with an honest portrayal of the experiential realities of those involved in the Underground Railroad, as well as an opportunity to learn and gain a clearer perspective on the events and the people involved with this “station” on the Underground Railroad.
