In this hike through environmental history, we’ll learn to read the landscape for signs of continental collisions, migrating mountains, and how people have utilized the steep and rocky terrain of Hellam Hills for thousands of years.

Your Presenter: Peggy Eppig, Educator, Lancaster Conservancy

Peggy is an environmental historian and dynamic conservation educator who offers a hands-on approach to every theme from deep-time history to 21st century conservation methods and practices. She brings over thirty years of interpretive, experiential education experience for all who have an interest in saving our nature for this and future generations. Her wilder interests are in ornithology (birds), herpetology (reptiles and amphibians), silvology (woodlands) and natural history illustration. She is an avid long-distance hiker and enthusiastic bike-packer who shares outdoor adventures with Amos the Coonhound.

Where to Meet: the pull-off near the intersection of Furnace Road and Chimney Rock Road

What to Expect: This will be a strenuous, “lollipop” 4- mile hike, up the forested slopes to Buzzards Roost and back. Recommended for ages 12 and older – all under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. There are no restroom facilities available on-site. The event will be held rain or shine, with severe weather cancellations happening on-site at the time of the event.

What to Bring: Wear closed-toe hiking shoes or hiking boots and bring water with a small snack. Hiking poles, binoculars, and hand-lens if you have them.
