Before morphing into the musical outfit now known as Southerland, the duo Matt Chase and Chris Rogers had been playing college towns and dive bars together for three years. They met in 2016 through mutual friend Ray Fulcher during a songwriting session and their musical compatibility is what has kept the two working and playing together since. Relying heavily on lyrical content while melodically tapping into a 90’s sound that feels current, the two create music that takes the storytelling of traditional country music and gives it a relatable, modern country vibe.
